Sundown, lights up, run on. On Friday, April 17, the Wallenpaupack track and field team participated in the yearly Twilight Invitational at North Pocono High School. This is one of the few invitationals the team goes to every year and is a fan favorite. Some people may be wondering, “Why is this race such a fan favorite to the audience and the runners?” The simplest answer to that is, the runners get to stay late into the night and run in the dark. Hence, the name, Twilight. During the event itself, history went down, as Ryan Vargo broke the school record the discus throw for the second time in a row this year, and Aiden Janowicz broke a Twilight meet record, as he got first in the 800 with a time of 1:55. June Brown also got first place with an impressive time of 2:20, almost beating her personal best!
The meet began at 4 pm, where it was soon pointed out that our Buckhorns were racing against 32 other teams. However, our runners did not back down for any of the events. Both of our 3200-relay teams raced with proficiency, and both placed eighth overall, gaining our team points. The guy and girl hurdlers raced consistently, with Reagan Shepard placing eighth as our leading hurdler for the girls, and Zayden Lamfers placing 16 out of 37 for the guys. Libby Brennan came in 12 out of 39 ladies in the 100-meter dash, and Isabel Rodriguez was eighth out of 40 in the boys 100.
Olivia Lojewski, Chris Smith, and AJ Freeman raced in the 1600, all racing well in the heat. The 400 was followed right after, with Jessieann Gallagher getting sixth out of 35, and Eli Hoot getting 31. Kassandra Herbert, Reagan Shepard, and Breanna Brandt placed 14, 15, and 16 in the 300-meter hurdles, which is an impressive performance.
Libby Brennan got fourth place in the 200-meter dash, with Izael Rodriguez getting third out of 33. The 3200 was run by distance runners Chase Predmore, Daniel Salinas, and Bethany Day. Predmore got 11 out of 23 runners, with Day getting 12 out of 23. The boys and girls got first place in the 4 by 4, bringing home medals for the team. The throwers and jumpers also had amazing performances. Nadia Blume got third in the discus throw. Annie James got sixth in the Javelin, with Jacob Rafferty getting ninth. Lillian Williams brought home a medal in the high jump, scoring second place, along with Nicholas VanBuskirk, who placed sixth.
The boys and girls’ team had an amazing night running, jumping, and throwing. Many individuals beat their personal bests, got medals, and were amazed by the performances that everyone had bought to the table. The boys team placed second overall, with the ladies following in third. Senior night will be coming soon, on April 27, on the Wallenpaupack track. Be there!
