Not all teams are defined by their records. That is the mindset of the Wallenpaupack golf team as they move through this 2026 season. Despite not seeing the win column yet this season, the team has seen immense strides from not only returning seniors, but younger players as well. The team has been working at two big goals, get the team score to less than 180 strokes, which they achieved once on September 10 against West Scranton with a score of 178 strokes, and also sending five golfers to pre-districts at Elkview Country Club next Monday, September 28, in which they are currently sending three golfers (seniors Gavin Wightman and Connor Mosher and freshman Carson Wightman) to compete in the event.
The team has had some extremely close results, including a three-stroke loss to Valley View 193-196, and six other events that they finished within ten strokes of their opponents. Despite the rough goings for the team, many individuals stood out across the team. The Wightman brothers each earned the title of Match Medalist, with younger brother Carsons’ coming on September 2 against Scranton, where he shot a 43 at Woodloch. Meanwhile, Gavins’ came more recently, as on September 14 against North Pocono, he shot a 41 at Elmhurst, which was tied for the lowest strokes in the event. Seniors Chase Dein and Connor Mosher have also stood out with the work they have put in to have a shot at qualifying for pre-districts next week. The work that the younger players have put in has not gone unnoticed either, as Coach Heckman said that some of these freshmen will be vital parts of the team’s future success.
The team had their senior night last night, and had one event left after pre-districts on Monday, which will be next Wednesday, September 30 against Scranton.
