The National Honor Society induction ceremony, held in the auditorium on Monday, October 5, was a great success.

Led by local chapter advisors Rita Saylor and Mary Gilson, the ceremony welcomed approximately 43 new inductees into the National Honor Society.

The ceremony began with Mr. Ey, who introduced the first student speaker, Max Edwards. Max welcomed those in attendance before introducing the guest speaker, Dr. Amanda Schmalzle. She delivered an engaging speech that incorporated personal anecdotes to emphasize the importance of community service. She highlighted how community service benefits not only the individual but also the community in which they live.

Returning to the ceremony’s student speakers, Max discussed the first of the National Honor Society’s four pillars: scholarship. “Scholarship means a commitment to learning,” he said, emphasizing its importance both in the classroom and throughout life.

The next pillar, service, was introduced by Nora Warner. She explained that service can be “expressed in various ways” and can take many forms. Within the National Honor Society, a willingness to serve others and contribute to the community is essential.

Orson Whitehouse continued with the pillar of leadership, discussing what distinguishes a true leader. As he explained, “Leadership is always needed…”

The final pillar, character, was presented by Vivian Yetter. Although each pillar plays an important role in the National Honor Society, character reflects who a person is and how they treat others. As Vivian stated, “Character is achieved, not received.”

With all four pillars presented, Vivian led the inductees in reciting the National Honor Society pledge aloud as they raised their right hands. Following the pledge, the students officially became members of the National Honor Society.

To conclude the ceremony, Mr. Ey offered his final congratulations and thanks to those in attendance before wishing everyone a good evening.
