When the marching band takes the field for performances, plays in the stands during football games, and attends parades and community events, a group of students called drum majors often lead them. The role of a drum major includes representing the band, conducting performances, assisting with rehearsals, and coordinating student leaders and group activities. To be selected as drum majors, students fill out an application, complete an interview, are evaluated on conducting and marching skills, and are voted on by members of the marching band. After they are selected, they attend a camp to learn about conducting, leadership, and marching skills. The position is a high honor with only a few students being selected each year. Did you know that several school district employees have been drum majors at Wallenpaupack? Our High School Vice Principal, Dr. Schmalzle, South Elementary School Music Teacher Ms. Balch, and Middle School Teacher Mrs. Huveneers have all held the role here during their time in high school.
This year, the marching band’s drum majors are Tyler Marino, Vivian Yetter, Maya Walek, and Nora Warner. More information about this year’s Drum Major team will be coming in future editions.
