On Thursday, November 6, our local Dime Bank organized the second annual Reality Fair for the entire graduating class in the high school gym. This event simulated real life, offering seniors the opportunity to experience the real world without the real consequences. There were two rounds: an AM session lasting from 8:25 AM to 10:30 AM, and a PM session from noon to 2:15 PM. Both rounds were identical in how they ran; the only difference was which seniors attended. Every senior had their own Excel spreadsheet that provided information about their jobs and salaries and included open spaces to personalize as they moved through the various stations. They were expected to make responsible financial decisions as they chose which important things they would need or want in their futures, including housing, transportation, healthcare, cell phones, charitable giving, pets, student loans, and credit cards. It was an engaging and interactive way to get students thinking about what comes after high school, and I think the seniors would agree that it was an eye-opening experience.
