The Pretty in Pink basketball games are an amazing event where two different communities rooting for different teams come together to support cancer. It also includes a great tradition of throwing pink and white streamers out on the court for the first basket scored in the girls’ game. This year both the boys and the girls basketball teams took on league rival Delaware Valley. They would prove to be a tough opponent in both games.
The boys came into the game with a 7-3 overall record and a 1-2 league record, and the opposing Warriors came into the game 8-3 overall also sporting a 1-2 record in the league. Wallenpaupack was coming off a tough loss to then undefeated Valley View 54 to 50. While DV was fresh off it’s first win in the league versus West Scranton. As the game began you could see DV had more momentum from the opening tip. This energy helped to shut down the Buckhorn offense which struggled to score throughout the game. The game ended in a 53 to 29 final in DV’s favor. Sam Wood and Tyler Lombardo combined for thirty of the Warriors final fifty-three points. For the Buckhorns Justin Blanding scored fifteen points as he inches closer to his 1,000th career point.
As for the girls, both teams would head into the game with a 5-6 overall record. The Lady Buckhorns were heading into the game off loss to a very good Valley View team, and DV had just beat West Scranton. The game began with a scoreless first couple minutes with the whole crowd anticipating the score to throw their streamers. The first score would come from a Sarah Decker free throw. The court then filled with pink and white. For the majority of the game, from that point on Paupack was in control. It was a scrappy and defensive game, but Wallenpaupack came out on top by a final of 38-26. DV had very balanced scoring throughout the team with their leading scorer, Krystina Orby only scoring six points. Senior Ella Smith led the scoring for Paupack with nineteen points.
