Ramadan is a Muslim holiday that represents spiritual reflection and recognition of the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan is celebrated yearly on the holiest month (ninth month) of the Islamic calendar. Participating in Ramadan requires one to abstain from food, water, and marital relations from dawn to sunset. Ramadan began this year on February 17 and will end on March 19. Marking the conclusion of Ramadan there is a three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr, where Muslims enjoy festivities, feasts and participate in special prayers.
