Saying Goodbye to Mrs. White

By: Kiana Madrigal

Mrs. White started her journey at Wallenpaupack Area High School as an aide, a position recommended by her friend. After three years, the librarian aide at the time passed away. Mrs. White received a phone call asking her to interview for the position, and the rest is history.

When Mrs. White first started, there were no computers in the library. She tagged new books with catalog cards and typed each one by hand with a typewriter. Over the years, she witnessed the transformation of the library from card catalogs and digital systems. Although the technology now is much simpler and easier, Mrs. White enjoys being kept busy with the cards. Before computer labs and iPads, she thought library life was more interesting when so many students came into the library and used it as a classroom. What she loved most, though, wasn’t the catalog or the technology— it was the students. “I love them all.”

Mrs. White truly enjoys coming to school every day because Wallenpaupack feels like a second family to her. “It’s part of my life.”

After 45 years of working at the school, she has built strong relationships with the students and staff. She gets along with everybody and has created a welcoming area where students feel supported because of her kindness and love for helping others. Through the years, Mrs. White has been more than a library aid. She’s been a welcoming smile in the morning, a source of comfort for students who need to talk, and a guiding hand.

As Mrs. White finishes her last few months working at Wallenpaupack, we would like to say thank you, on behalf of all students and staff members, for your countless hours of work devoted to the school.
