Our Lady Buckhorns hosted their annual Pink Out Game on Saturday, February 7, after it had been delayed multiple times due to poor weather. The event was a girl-boy doubleheader against the West Scranton Invaders, with the girls’ JV team kicking things off in the high school gym, followed by the girls’ varsity team and then the boys’ varsity game. The boys JV team played in the Intermediate gym. It was an exciting day filled with energy—not only from the games themselves, but also from the halftime activities, the bake sale supporting the cause, and the powerful reason behind the event.

The JV team started a little rocky; however, they quickly turned things around and refused to let up. By the second half, they had built such a strong lead that the coach allowed starting center Sophie Fontano to attempt a three-point shot. The gym buzzed with anticipation as everyone waited for her opportunity. When it finally happened, the moment brought the crowd to its feet, and the game soon came to a close. All of our girls played an outstanding game, earning a 39–5 victory.

The varsity team faced similar struggles early on. In the first half, shots were not falling, allowing the Invaders to build a 32-16 lead. The crowd sat on the edge of their seats, especially since the Buckhorns had previously beaten this team. After a motivating halftime pep talk, our girls came out stronger than ever, climbing out of the hole they had dug and securing a dominant 59–49 win.

Both teams played incredible games in honor of family members, friends, and even strangers who are currently battling—or have battled—cancer. Assistant and junior varsity coach Pilar Beam put together a heartwarming video recognizing each and every person the Buckhorns played for that day, as well as the many supporters in the stands, including Custodian Tim Kizer, a dedicated member of our school community whose presence and continued support reflect the lasting impact this cause has on so many lives. Congratulations on two amazing wins for a truly great cause. The boys, unfortunately, could not complete the sweep as they lost to the Invaders.
