The boys’ basketball season started with some adversity with the boys not having their annual tip-off tournament to begin their season, as well as suffering two very close losses in their first two games. This past Tuesday Forest City played, a team that had also not had the start they had hoped for. The result was a 57-35 win for the Buckhorns.
This year’s Buckhorn basketball team consists of a strong core of seniors including JP Yeo, Diego Adames, Nick VanBuskirk, Landon Shanaberger, and Jamison Ostrowski. Led by this group of seniors, everything for the Bucks seemed to click Tuesday night. Paupack started the game fast, taking the opening tip for a basket, and they never looked back. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 22-10. Forest City’s struggles continued into the second quarter as they were suffocated by terrific defense from Wallenpaupack. The Foresters were only able to add two baskets to their total by the half with the core 37-14. The second half was more of the same as Paupack as Senior Arthur Schmidt put the finishing touches on Forest City with a high finish at the rim. The final score was 57 to 35.
Not only was this game the first win for Paupack this season, but it was also the first win for new head coach Kevin Miller, which is a huge landmark for his early career. Hopefully this win is just the beginning of the accomplishments to come. The next possible step for Coach Miller is taking down Abington Heights. Over past years Wallenpaupack has been in many close games with the Comets but haven’t been able to break through. Yesterday, the Bucks took a hard-fought loss to Abington. They will face Nazareth Monday night home, at 6:45. Next week the Buckhorns will be participating in Honesdale’s Jaycee Tournament. They will take on East Stroudsburg South in the first round with a trip to the championship and the possibility of another shot at Honesdale on the line. The first round’s tip-off is at 6:30 at Honesdale.
