The Leadership and Diversity Club is a student-run organization where members assess areas that need attention within our community, then work towards building solutions. At the beginning of the year, the students identify aspects of strength and growth for our community and form projects, which are tackled throughout the school year. Just this year, students in Leadership and Diversity Club have presented at the PA School Counselor Association Annual Conference, completed the grant for the Lakeside Lounge, met with the Curriculum Director and various teachers to discuss diversity in our curriculum, and more. If you are looking for a way to get involved within our school and promote change in our community, the Leadership and Diversity Club is for you!
I interviewed Dr. Dougherty, who has been the advisor for three years, to understand further all the club does and learn about her experience with the members. Dr. Dougherty’s favorite part of the club is the “strong emphasis on student voice.”
She states that Wallenpaupack students can make a difference locally and globally if given the proper opportunity. They will be hosting two Community Dinner and Conversations, one being based on Mental Health on May 9, and the other will have a DEI (Diversity, equity, and inclusion) focus on May 30. If you would like to join them for either of those events, you may reach out to Dr. Dougherty at dougheca@wallenpaupack.org, or contact any of the students already in the club.
