Winter Sports

Written By: BETHANY DAY

It’s that time of season, when the air gets cold, and snow starts to hit the
ground. With the sad yet
beautiful weather, winter sports will be arriving. Wallenpaupack has fabulous
winter sports. The sports include boys and girls wrestling, swimming, and boys’
and girls’ basketball. Girl’s wrestling is brand new to our school!
The girls’ wrestling head coach is Mr. Peters with Ms. Carroll as his assistant.
I asked Mr. Peters about what inspired him to make a girls’ wrestling team. “We
have had a good group of girls in junior high for the last two years and now
they’re in high school, and they fully deserve to have their own team. I think that
not having a girls’ team to this point has kept a lot of ladies out of this sport that
they may would of either joined or, if already in it, stay involved.”
If the girls wrestling team can get at least 18 girls, Wallenpaupack will be
able to have a wrestling team.
Our school also has other sports, as mentioned before, that would love to
have new members join their teams. I asked each of the coaches why people
should join the sport, to which they all gave me excellent answers. Mrs. Campbell,
the head coach of swimming, stated, “I think swimming is a great sport, it is also a
great opportunity for other athletes to get in shape for their spring sports. It’s low
impact as there’s not a lot of risk of getting injuries. It’s also really good for your
muscles and joints. It’s a great cross training technique for a lot of athletes who
want to do a lot better in their spring sports.”
Mr.McGinnis, boys basketball head coach, said, “Boys basketball is for
anyone who enjoys playing a game of basketball and has the desire to work hard
to get better!”
Mr.Krushnowski, boys wrestling head coach, told us, “People should join if
they want to get into their best shape. The team treats each other like family.
People should also join if they want to develop the mental toughness and
discipline needed for your post-high school years. You don’t need experience to be
able to wrestle.”
We hope everyone has a good winter and we wish the best of luck to all winter sports!
