Senior Spotlight: Gunnar Myers

Written by Ty Lounsbury

The wrestling team is anticipating a pretty good season this year, starting November 16with several promising athletes on the team, such as Xaidien Schock, Nicholas Skokos, Giovanni Lomonaco, Conan Keir, Logan Caruso, Gabe Caufield, Manny Caufield, Locke Lamfers, Aaron Berninger, Thomas Preston, Brendon Bristol, Justin Guinard, Justin Gougeon, George Rafferty, Christopher Ledesma, and Gunnar Myers. These athletes have all proven themselves to be impressive wrestlers, but one stands above the rest.

Senior Gunnar Myers has had a spotlight on him since he was a freshman. In the preseason alone, he defeated three Nationally Ranked wrestlers and additionally beat Ryan Garvick, the #1 wrestler in the state for his weight class. He has a career record of 104 wins – 17 losses and is a two-time District Two Champion, a three-time State Qualifier, and two-time State Top Six. It’s no wonder Myers has been recognized in several National Rankings. He’scommitted to the United States Naval Academy, and, at this time, he does not plan to continuewrestling after college.

Although Myers is a spectacular wrestler, it’s not just him. The team had a lot of accomplishments last year, like winning the Wyalusing Ram Duals and the Cavalier Duals, taking third place in the District Two Duals (which is the program’s best finish ever), third place in the District Individual Tournament (which is also a new best for the team), and they also broke their record for the most wins as a team in a season with 20. Last year, the team only had threelosses. You don’t have to know a lot about wrestling to recognize that Wallenpaupack’s wrestling team has been doing pretty well. There’s a lot of impressive athletes on the team, so get ready to cheer them on through the upcoming season as they continue to break school records!
